Network types

 

PAN:

PAN stands for personal area network. This type of network that is used on a personal level. It’s a small network that is used for connecting devices such as smartphones, tablets or laptops. They connect to each other by using wireless technologies, for example Bluetooth.


LAN:

LAN stands for local area network. Basically, a group of devices (computers, printers, servers) that are in the same building are connected to each other. The most usual type of LAN is an Ethernet LAN using a switch.


WLAN:

WLAN stands for wireless local area network. WLAN uses wireless communication instead of wired communication. A wireless LAN will usually have a Wi-Fi router or a wireless access pint for wireless devices (laptops, Pc’s, tablets).


CAN:

CAN stands for campus area network. A CAN is a network that connects two or more LAN’s together in a limited area (different buildings). The different buildings are connected to each other to form a larger network (have their own LAN).


MAN:

MAN stands for metropolitan area network. It’s an even larger network than a CAN. It’s a network, that spans over several buildings in a city or town. MAN0s are usually connected by using a high-speed connection, for example a fiber optic cable. They can share data to each other.


WAN:

WAN stands for wide area network. WAN is the largest type of network. It spans over a latge geographical area. For example one location in Africa, and one in Europe.
